The specifications of a customer’s tank car are dependent on the properties of the commodity intended to be shipped. These properties will influence the determination of:

Plastics Covered Hopper Cars

 

PLASTICS COVERED HOPPER CARS

UTLX offers leases of new and existing plastics covered hopper cars to complement the tank car fleets of our petrochemical customers. Plastics covered hopper cars transport plastic pellets, flakes and resins. Our existing fleet consists of 5,800 and 6,270 cubic-foot capacity cars to accommodate 286,000 pound gross rail limits. Key features include:

  • Vented top hatches
  • Pneumatic unloading gates
  • Design for avoidance of product contamination

 

PLASTICS COVERED HOPPER CARS

Plastic pellet covered hopper cars effectively transport plastic pellets, flakes, and resins of all sizes. Both 5,800 and 6,270 cubic-foot cars are built to accommodate 286,000 pound gross rail limits for plastics shipments. From top hatches to bottom unloading gates, UTLX plastic pellet covered hopper cars are designed for quick and efficient unloading and protect against even the smallest product contamination.

INTERIOR COATINGS AND LININGS

Coatings and linings may be applied to the interior of a railcar to act as a barrier to prevent the commodity and the vessel metals from interacting with each other, in order to avoid product contamination and car corrosion. UTLX offerings include interior coatings, which are spray-on protective coverings applied in one or more layers, and interior linings, which are either sheet or laminated-type rubber material.

Although the shipper is ultimately responsible for selecting protective interior coatings and linings, UTLX experts are available to provide guidance based on knowledge gained by serving the largest and most varied fleet in North America. UTLX performs research routinely to determine optimal application guidelines which include:

  • Degree of thickness
  • Suitable mix of coating material and solvents
  • Procedures for spray applications
